The vice president of the New York State Assembly, Phil Ramos, raises his voice of protest in defense of the Hispanic community and strongly condemns the raids and arrests made by the ICE agency terrorizing local families on the outskirts of schools in Brentwood, Long Island, during the recent first day of classes.
As reported, on September 4, Ramos’s office was contacted by the family of a man who was arrested near the Brentwood High School by agents of the United States immigration and customs control service (ICE) shortly after leaving his 16 -year -old son in the aforementioned educational center. The family communicated in search of help and guidance after this traumatic incident.
Therefore, Ramos repudiates these permanent ICE operational which causes fear, chaos and outrage in our neighborhoods, having “in the sights as objectives” especially to Hispanic immigrants in this area of Suffolk County.
“My office is working closely with the family to support them while going through this deeply traumatic experience,” said Democratic Assemblyman Ramos.
The following is the statement issued by Phil Ramos aimed at public opinion:
«Yesterday, ICE agents made raids Coordinated on the outskirts of Brentwood high school, separating parents from their children and interrupting what should have been a safe and cozy start of the course.
The first day of class must be full of pride, joy and hope. It is a time when parents send their children to classrooms with dreams for the future, and in which students get enthusiastic about learning and grow. But instead of celebration, the families of our community found themselves with fear and uncertainty at the hands of an agency that has lost its moral compass.
What should have been a day of laughter and possibilities became one of tears and despair. Traumatized children, not knowing if their parents would return, is something that no compassionate person can accept. These are not legitimate actions of the forces of order; They are kidnapping carried out under the false excuse of security.
This is not only inhuman, but anti -American. Violates the principles on which our nation was built: life, freedom and the search for happiness. Every family, regardless of their origin, deserves the right to live without fear, free from the threat of being shattered simply for looking for a better life for their children.
ICE is not protecting our community, it is terrifying it. In doing so, they rob children their innocence, parents and families and their right to exist in peace.
I call on the leaders of all levels of government —Federal, state and local – so that they are up to the circumstances. Silence is complicity. We cannot and should not look the other way while our neighbors are persecuted, while children cry for their parents, while families are destroyed before our eyes. This is not a normal situation. It is a moral crisis that demands courage and action.
To every family suffering today: they are not alone. We see them. We listen to them. We support them. Together, we will fight to protect their children, their dignity and their future. Brentwood’s strength has always come from our resilience, our solidarity and our conviction that each child deserves to feel safe and loved.
History will remember our position at this time. I choose to support our families. I choose to support our children. I choose to support my community.
Sincerely,
Phil Ramos, vice president of the New York State Assembly »
