Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis joined the Hempstead community at the Anthem BlueCross BlueShield office in Long Island, NY, for a major “Back to School” celebration.
During the event, held on August 19, Anthem and its community partners highlighted the importance of health screenings, wellness resources and family engagement as critical components for academic success.
«Success in the classroom goes far beyond test scores and assignments; By providing essential health and wellness resources to our community, Anthem contributes greatly to families thriving year-round,” said Legislator Davis.
“I thank you for organizing this recent back-to-school event at your community service center and I wish you all an excellent school year,” stressed the Democratic official representing Rockville Centre.
Notably, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield launched its annual back-to-school campaign, bringing free community events to families across Long Island and the New York metropolitan area.
Designed to prepare students for a healthy return to school, the campaign highlights the importance of health screenings, wellness resources and family engagement as critical components of academic success.

“Our children cannot succeed in school if they are not well prepared with the necessary supplies and in good health,” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. “Thank you to our friends at Anthem for being present in our communities and ensuring that families have the information and resources necessary to make the next school year as healthy and productive as possible.”
Along with Anthem, the American Red Cross, NYU Langone, the Hispanic Counseling Center and many other organizations participated in the Nassau County event. This year’s campaign builds on the success of last year’s initiative, when more than 100,000 school supplies and 10,000 books were distributed.
Each event offers personalized support for children returning to school and their families, including free health-related gifts, wellness education and access to local service providers.
“Backpacks and pencils are important, but so is good health,” said Dr. Christy Valentine Theard, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Medicaid and Medicare in New York. «These events go beyond school supplies. “They connect families with the care and information they need to help their children thrive, both inside and outside the classroom.”
Of note, the event series, which runs through September 9, spans urban and suburban communities and includes collaborations with local school districts and nonprofit organizations.
Health-related services include hygiene kits, vision and hearing screenings (where available), referrals for mental health care, and wellness education.
