The state senator Siela Bynoe announced on May 8 that the New York State Budget will include $ 24 million in aid funds for the Hempstead school district, which will help you avoid significant cuts in programs and personnel in this Long Island area.
The district requested financial assistance to the State on March 6 to avoid cuts to a deficit greater than $ 30 million for the 2025-26 school year. Bynoe announced that same month that he had proposed the inclusion of a single provisional fund in the state budget.
The Hempstead School District Education Board approved a $ 358 million budget for the next school year at its meeting held on April 23. The community members will vote on the budget in the elections next Tuesday, May 20.
The highest number of state aid of Nassau County, $ 239.7 million, was proposed for Hempstead in the initial budget offer of New York governor, Kathy Hochul, in January. The figure represented a state aid package of $ 239.7 million for the district, the highest in Nassau.
However, that total is only $ 4 million higher than the figure granted to the Hempstead school district by 2024-25, which, according to the district, was not enough.
Part of the governor’s financial package includes funds for transition aid to Chárter schools, which the school expected to receive almost half of the $ 10.9 million that received this year for the 2025-26 school year.
Senator Bynoe declared in March that it is necessary to develop a plan to address the financial situation of the district for the future.
The 2025-26 education budget of Governor Hochul was expected to be completed on April 1, but is still being completed in early May.
