The Thalia Spanish Theater in Sunnyside, Queens, presents two plays that have returned by public request until November 9: “Women Do It Better Than Men” and “Life Lessons.” Both are performed in Spanish with English surtitles and reflect the theater’s mission: to encourage learning, empathy, motivation and reflection.
WOMEN VS MEN
The monologue “Women do it better than men,” by award-winning Puerto Rican playwright Roberto Ramos Perea, is presented on Fridays at 8 pm until November 7.
The multi-award-winning Spanish actress Soledad López displays her talent and stage mastery playing several characters in this monologue, demonstrating her versatility and experience.
The work tells the story of an attractive psychologist who teaches a personal growth workshop and ends up sharing her life experiences: her childhood, the impact of her first menstruation, her relationship with her parents, sexual awakening, first loves, the myths and realities of marriage, divorce, loves after 50 and much more.
As she turns 50, the protagonist believes she is ready to recognize different types of serial seducers and, of course, flee from them.
At the end of the play, the question arises: what do we do better than men? The public responds: everything. The good, the bad, the improbable and the credible.
LIFE LESSONS
“Life Lessons,” by Spanish playwright Eduardo Galán, has won 15 awards, including that of the Spanish Academy of Performing Arts in 2023 for Best Theater Production in New York of Contemporary Hispanic Authorship.
The play features Soledad López and the renowned Ecuadorian actor William Saquicela. It is presented on Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm, until November 9.
The story follows a humble uneducated fishmonger and a school teacher who is cultured and refined in her language. For months, every Friday they meet in tutoring meetings, in a duel of personalities that will change both their lives forever. In the middle of the story is Daniela, the fishmonger’s teenage daughter, and her big secret, which the teacher will soon discover.
The work moves and reflects the unconditional love of a father for his daughter, whom he accepts as she is. In the end, the fishmonger and the teacher discover that they are not as different as they thought.
“Life Lessons” also highlights the power of books (The Red Leaf, One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Little Prince) and reading as positive agents of change.
