A total of 33 students from the main preparatory schools for Professional and Technical Education of Nassau Specs —Barry Tech, GC Tech and Long Island High School for the Arts (Lihsa) – obtained the greatest honors at the Skillsusa Regional Conference of the state of New York, recently held at the Suffolk County Community College.
Nine students obtained first place, seventeen the second and seven third place.
The Regional Conference is part of a national series of events that Skillsusa sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive and qualified workforce.
During the event, students participate in a series of timed activities related to their careers in Barry Tech, GC Tech and Long Island High School for the arts.
They also participate in competencies focused on leadership and professional development. Students who succeed in regional competition advance to the State Conference in Syracuse, NY.
The most prominent go to the National Leadership Conference and Skills in Louisville, Kentucky in June.
Skillsusa is an alliance of students, teachers and industry leaders who work together to prepare high school and university students to become leaders in the business world.
The program helps establish industry standards for training in labor skills and instills respect for community service in its participants.
The United States Department of Work recognizes Skillsusa as a “successful youth development program promoted by employers.”
