The Department of Social Studies and the Debate Clubs of the Uniontele School District recently organized the prestigious “Long Island Classic Debate Tournament”, sponsored by the American Debate League, an event developed at the Uniontele High School.
More than 650 debate students from the Long Island area, as well as from New York City and Westchester County, gathered to compete at primary, secondary and high school levels.
New York state senator, Siela A. Bynoe, and New York state assemblyman Michael Desido also attended the event, encouraging students while demonstrating their skills and skills in the debate.
“The debate develops the essential skills of the 21st century: critical thinking, communication, collaboration and civic literacy, while empowering students to get involved deeply with the problems that make up our world,” said David Hollander, director of Social Studies of Unionndale School District. “Transforms the content into action and students into informed and persuasive citizens.”
The event began with an opening ceremony, after which the students participated in 3 rounds of debate focused on various topics.
This was followed by an exciting closing ceremony, which celebrated the effort of all students and debate instructors, and recognized the outstanding performances of the day.
Unionale’s Parent and Teachers Association (PTSA) also sold snacks throughout the day and raised funds for scholarships of the Uniontele PTSE.

It should be noted that the Unionale school district awarded 9 awards to individual speakers and 6 team awards in all educational degrees. The Walnut Street School obtained first place in the yellow beginner division, and Lawrence Road Middle School obtained second place in the general intermediate division.
“Congratulations to our fantastic debate coaches for their arduous work throughout the year supporting our debaters,” said Hollander.
