“The Potluck”: a musical inspired by the Greensboro massacre
From July 24 to August 2, 2026
Soho Rep and INTAR Theater present “The Potluck,” a new musical by playwright and composer César Álvarez, directed by Sarah Benson. Inspired by the 1979 Greensboro Massacre, where five union organizers were murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party, the play blends music, humor and supernatural elements to explore inherited trauma, memory, spirituality and resistance. Álvarez, born a year after the tragedy and named in honor of two of the victims, transforms that story into an original and deeply human proposal.
Featuring an intergenerational cast of 12 artists drawn from Broadway, Off-Broadway and diverse musical traditions, the production offers an innovative and emotional theatrical experience.
