The playground at Bowling Green Elementary School in East Meadow, Long Island, was recently transformed into an interactive safety center; There, students in the district’s Extended School Year program spent the day learning from members of the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) and the East Meadow Fire Department.
Patrol cars, armored vehicles, mounted police horses, a fire truck and a fire ambulance lined the quad on July 13 as students participated in hands-on stations to meet local emergency crews and discover how they help keep the community safe.
Throughout the morning, students eagerly explored emergency vehicles, asked questions, and enjoyed memorable interactions with police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel.
NCPD members explained their daily responsibilities to the children and showed them up close the patrol cars, armored vehicles and specialized equipment.
The students met the mounted unit officers and their horses, which for many was the highlight of the day. By exploring the vehicles and learning about the tools officers use in their work, students gained a better understanding of policing and the important role officers play in the community.
East Meadow firefighters shared important tips on fire safety and prevention, as well as showing off the protective equipment they use when responding to emergencies.
Students toured both a fire truck and an ambulance before watching a demonstration on the use of a fire hose, offering an exciting insight into the work they do to protect the community.
To thank their visitors, students delivered handmade thank you cards to both departments and expressed their gratitude with smiles, hugs, and high fives.
