The commitment, passion and positive impact of Idelsa Méndez in the Bronx community have been recognized with a prestigious award in the Duarte Honors event: recognizing ours. The outstanding Development Officer of Hostos Community College and proud ex -alumine was honored last Wednesday, February 26 for their tireless work in favor of the education and progress of Latin students.
This event, organized by the Dominican-American Network of Young Professionals (DANYP), honors Dominican leaders who leave their mark on their communities. The award, inspired by Juan Pablo Duarte, the hero of Dominican Independence, was given to Méndez by Councilor Rafael Salamanca, Jr. “This recognition is a testimony of your hard work, dedication and the incredible impact you have had in your field and community,” said the organizers.
Méndez expressed his deep emotion upon receiving the distinction and reaffirmed his commitment to education as a tool for social transformation. “This moment is not only about me, but about students, families and change agents who believe in the power of education to transform lives,” he said. “For the Dominican community in the south of Bronx, education is not just an opportunity, it is a necessity. It is the key to breaking cycles of inequality and building a future where each child, regardless of their origin, has the possibility of succeeding.”
During the Covid-19 Pandemia, Méndez demonstrated his leadership by joining forces with Mott Haven Bar and Grill and World Central Kitchen to combat the food insecurity of host students. His initiative grew to benefit the entire University Community of Cuny in the Bronx, reflecting its commitment to student well -being.

His work has also been recognized on other occasions, as in 2020, when he received the New York Yankees Community Achievement Award for his dedication to the community. “Idelsa is a key piece in the Institutional Advancement team of Hostos,” said Colette Atkins, vice president of the Institutional Advance Division of the College. “His passion, his ties with the community and his tireless work in favor of students make this recognition more than deserved.”
Grateful for the award, Méndez dedicated the award to Hostos Community College, to his community and all those who fight for educational equity. With his example, he continues to inspire the new generations and demonstrating that when one of us advances, we all advance.
