Central American arrests in the US and Mexico fall more than 86 % in 2025

The number of apprehensions of Central Americans in the United States and Mexico: from Salvadorans, Hondurans and Guatemalans – citizens of the so -called northern triangle of Central America – reached 39,292 in the first five months of 2025, 86.5 % less than in the same period of the year 2024, according to data obtained by EFE on Monday.

The official figures collected by the International Organization for Migration (IIM) indicate that these arrests were lower in their number at 291,580 computed between January and May 2024.

Of the total detainees, 10,675 (27.16 %) come from El Salvador, 14,315 (36.43 %) of Honduras and 14,302 (36.39 %) from Guatemala, with a reduction in the figures marked in January, when Donald Trump assumed his second term in the United States.

In January, apprehensions in both countries added 21,387 records and in February they fell to 6,673, being April the least number when computing 3,224 cases.

In these five months accounted for, only the apprehensions on the United States border added 17,568 and in Mexico they ascended 21,724.

The country that has seen a greater reduction in the arrest of its citizens is Guatemala with -90 % in the United States and -88.5 % in Mexico, Honduras follows with -86.9 % in US territory and -85 % in Mexican soil.

In the case of El Salvador, the reduction was 87.6 % in the United States and -75.6 % in Mexico.

The data collected by the IOM comes from the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of the United States, and the Government of Mexico.

Every year, more than 500,000 people from these three countries try to irregularly emigrate to the United States in search of better living conditions.
