The American Coco Gauff beat her compatriot Iva Jovic in the round of 16 of the 2026 US Open and will face the Russian Mirra Andreeva in the next round of the quarterfinals.
Gauff, world number 4 and champion in New York in 2023, beat Jovic (n.14) 6-1 and 6-4 in 1 hour and 33 minutes.
“I think the difference was that I finally managed to take advantage of the break opportunities,” Gauff said after the match, after converting 5 of his 11 breaking balls.
«Honestly, there was one game where I felt like I was running a marathon. That helped me move forward. “It was probably the first time in a long time that I was out of breath on a court,” he added, about a point at 24 strokes in the final stretch of the match.
In the next round of the US Open 2026, Gauff will face the Russian Andreeva (no. 5) this Wednesday, whom she has defeated in her five previous meetings. Andreeva, however, took the Roland Garros title this year from Gauff, champion in 2025.
With her qualification, Gauff completed the quarterfinal draw of the women’s tournament being played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY.
The other crosses in this instance are Aryna Sabalenka-Linda Noskova, Jessica Pegula-Emma Navarro and Qinwen Zheng-Elena Rybakina.
Zverev to 4th. US Open
The German Alexander Zverev defeated the Italian-Argentine Luciano Darderi in the third set tiebreaker, after overwhelming him in the first two, and thus qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2026 United States Open that is taking place in Flushing Meadows.
Zverev, number 2 in the world and first seed in New York, got rid of Darderi (n.22) 6-2, 6-2 and 7-6(3) in 2 hours and 31 minutes.
In the quarterfinals, Zverev will face the Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp (n.70) on Wednesday, in a half of the draw that has been very clear for the German.
The other semi-finalist will come from the cross between the Russian Karen Khachanov (n.50) and the Belgian Alexander Blockx (n.34).
In the other half of the US Open 2026 draw, the quarterfinals this Tuesday pit the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (n.3) against the American Ben Shelton (n.9) and the Americans Frances Tiafoe (n.12) and Alex Michelsen (n.46).
It should be noted that Zverev entered the match against Darderi in an overwhelming manner, with an identical script for the first two sets: he took a 4-0 lead, with two breaks of serve, before closing both sets by a resounding 6-2.
But when the duel already seemed like a formality, Darderi reacted. The one from Villa Gesell defended his serve furiously, did not concede another break and forced the German to play a tie-break that could change the course of the tie.
Darderi’s big problem on the night was the rest, with only 22% of points won, which left him with only one ‘break’ opportunity – lost – in the entire match. Zverev won 42% of his points over the rest.
«Darderi started playing incredibly in the third set. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anyone hit the ball so hard and so consistently throughout an entire set. So you have to give him credit. He made it very difficult for me,” Zverev explained at the foot of the court.
After two very demanding first matches, both five sets and almost ten hours between them, against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (n.89) and the Frenchman Quentin Halys (n.52), Zverev has righted the course starting in the third round.
First, clearly surpassing the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo (n.28) and now Darderi.
«I am happy, without a doubt. I think, compared to the first two matches, the level has been rising and, of course, that is the goal,” Zverev said.
