The Town of Hempstead, in collaboration with Career Jam and HempsteadWorks, welcomed more than 1,000 high school students to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale for the town’s inaugural Career Jam career counseling event.
The first of its kind on Long Island, Career Jam provides students with the opportunity to break out of the traditional classroom and explore career paths through interactive experiences, conversations with industry leaders and entrepreneurs, networking opportunities, and exposure to a wide variety of sectors.
“Today is about giving our students a firsthand look at the opportunities that await them beyond the classroom,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor John Ferretti.
“Career Jam brings together young people with business leaders, professionals and employers so they can ask questions, network and start thinking about where their interests may take them,” he stressed.
Throughout the day, students participated in an immersive program designed to introduce them to different industries and potential career paths, while also offering hands-on opportunities to network and learn directly from industry professionals.
Hempstead Township thanked participating students, teachers and administrators, as well as sponsors, exhibitors and event participants, for helping launch the first Career Jam on Long Island.
Students and educators from several local high schools participated in the program, including: Baldwin, Southside (Rockville Centre), Lawrence, East Rockaway, Lynbrook, Valley Stream North, Valley Stream Central, Valley Stream South, Malverne, East Meadow, Hempstead, Sewanhaka, Long Beach, Uniondale, Mepham, Division Avenue (Levittown), Roosevelt, MacArthur (Levittown), and West Hempstead.
“We are proud to bring this innovative program to Long Island for the first time,” Ferretti said. “I hope that today’s students will help inspire even greater Career Jam events here in Hempstead Township for years to come.”
Note that HempsteadWorks offers Hempstead residents resources for career development, training and employment support, including personalized career counseling, job readiness workshops and training, occupational skills training, job search assistance, support services, and access to technology and resources for job applications and research.
