The New York Latin Film Festival (NYLFF) reaches its 25th anniversary from September 13 to 21 with a week full of film, music and culture. With 120 films from 15 countries, the festival promises to surprise New York in Salas del Regal Union Square and the emblematic United Palace, in addition to offering a free outdoor event in Quisqueya Plaza.
The Nylff will open with “Mad Bills to pay”, by Joel Alfonso Vargas, an intense Bronx story about young love, daily struggle and community. The week also pays tribute to Michelle Rodríguez, protagonist of the film that launched her to stardom, “Girlfight”, and who will receive the Nylff Impact award for its contribution to Latin representation in Hollywood.
Among the most anticipated titles are “A Clean Shot” (Dominican Republic), a drama of action on loyalty and revenge; “La Salsa lives”, which tells the story of the sauce from New York to Cali, with legends like Rubén Blades and Johnny “Dandy” Rodríguez; and “Aguadilla” (Puerto Rico/USA.), On a formerurfista caught in a dangerous love triangle.
The festival also bets on fresh stories and short films that reflect Latin diversity, such as “to West Side Story Story”, about a Puerto Rican director facing the challenges of mounting an iconic musical, and “Papota”, which follows a duo of Argentine-Uruguayan trap in a fun and chaotic adventure.
In addition, the future digital conference will bring together content creators, technology experts and distributors focused on the Latin public. The “Natives” website will be presented, which follows native and queer New Yorkers while navigating friendship, love and life in the city.
The celebration culminates with a free concert of J NOA, Ropera and Dominican singer nominated twice to the Latin Grammy, who will take the energy of his music to the heart of Washington Heights.
With this edition, the Nylff not only shows the creativity of Latin filmmakers throughout the continent, but reaffirms its commitment to offer a space where Latin stories are seen and heard in New York.
