Sofia Castro unleashes her most visceral alter ego in “how you dare”

Sofia Castro does not sing from the open wound, but from the moment she decides not to go back. With her new single “How you dare”, the Colombian singer -songwriter is allowed to explore an intense, visceral and little spoken facet of heartbreak: anger.

Through a brave and empowered alter ego, Sofia shouts what is often silent and, in that process, accompanies those who cross the same path. The song, which mixes pop with the force of Mexican regional sound, is an emotional outbreak that speaks from the fury that is often hidden behind a break.

With more than 27 million followers on digital platforms and more than 83 million combined streams, Sofía Castro has established itself as one of the most promising voices of current Latin music. The artist signed by Universal Music Latino, has been nominated for important awards such as our land, MTV Miaw and my TV people, and recently shone live during the opening ceremony of the Concacaf Women’s Gold Cup 2024 Concacaf final in San Diego.

In this conversation, Sofia tells us about her creative process, how she has found her sound in a merger between Mexican pop and regional music, and the moment of artistic maturity she is living.

Authentic, direct and brave, Sofía Castro not only writes songs: Create catharsis. And with “how you dare,” invite everyone to do the same.

“How you dare” transmits great emotional intensity. How was this song born and what did you want to express with her?

This is a song that sings an alter ego because I don’t know if I, Sofia, would reaction like this, but it is a song of a person giving their place.

The song conveys anger, pain and empowerment. Do you feel that this is a hymn for those who have lived a difficult breakup?

I hope yes! I want that to be, but I feel that to get to that point, you must have a lot of willpower.

In the music industry, songs about heartbreak usually focus on sadness or nostalgia, but here we see a lot of fury and liberation. Was it intentional to highlight this side of the break?

Yes, I feel that he is super human. Sometimes people say ‘I want him to do super good.’ But do you really want the person to do super good? (laughs) I feel that it is a very human side that is little spoken.

How do you think the public will identify with “how do you dare”? Have you received any special reaction from your followers?

They have told me, ‘good that you wrote this song because I am just going through that moment of my life’. And I tell you very well! Because you are already in the stage of here you do not come back. To those who do not, encourage … work on that.

Each launch seems to show a new facet of Sofia Castro. At what stage do you feel that you are now as an artist?

I think I already definitely found my sound. I love pop and this Mexican music goes a lot with my sound. I am in a phase where I am confident in what I compose and how I feel. I feel that I am ready for an album.

Sofia Castro

How was the process of consolidating your sound in regional pop? What musical influences have this path marked?

I have listened to Majo Aguilar and even had an opportunity to make a 2.0 version of another song of mine that is already overcome. I love Frontera Group. With this music, I was Colombian, I was very afraid to venture into this, but I feel that the people of Mexico are so beautiful, that the doors opened me.

What artists would you like to collaborate in the future?

My dream is Humbe, a Mexican artist. And dreaming more, that I say ‘My God blessed’, Kali Uchis.

If you could describe in a phrase what it means “how you dare” for you, what would it be?

I would say my place.
