With the closure of classes in Long Island, the state senator of New York, Mónica R. Martínez, reminds students, parents and guardians that intellectual enrichment does not have to end just because classes have finished.
To combat the “Summer Decline” (“Summer Slide”), during which students lose part of the achievements made during the previous school year, the Senate of the State of NY launches its “2025 summer reading program”.
The annual event encourages parents and tutors to keep their children committed to learning, while encouraging love for reading, which will boost reading writing skills during the summer months and then.
This year’s theme, “Color our world”, was developed in collaboration with the Collaborative Summer Libraries (CSLP) program to create inclusive programs based on literacy that are pleasant for all ages.
To participate, parents and guardians are asked to send their children’s summer reading activities, including the names of 3 books read, Senator Martínez through the “Summer Reading Program” website until August 22.
Registered children will receive an achievement certificate from Senator Martínez in recognition of their achievements.
“Summer is the perfect time for students to discover their artistic and creative side through reading,” Martínez said.
“Summer reading allows students to explore their interests while strengthening reading and understanding skills that will boost their success in September and from now on. As an ex -education, I encourage families to participate in the 2025 Summer Reading Program of the NYS Senate to keep their children motivated, intellectually stimulated and ready to prosper when they return to school this autumn.”
According to the New York State Library, summer reading programs such as this plays a crucial role in the advancement of literacy and academic performance.
By involving children and adolescents in voluntary reading, these programs promote successful reading experiences and support the development of literacy in communities throughout the New York state.
