Long Island landmarks to light up teal to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s

Some of Long Island’s most iconic landmarks, including the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building and Babylon City Hall, will be illuminated in teal next Monday, November 2, as part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s (AFA) annual Light the World in Teal campaign, dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s.

These sites will join more than 1,750 locations in all 50 U.S. states and 17 other countries or territories around the world to raise awareness and support for all people affected by Alzheimer’s, in what is considered the largest collective lighting initiative organized worldwide for a single cause.

Wearing teal

It should be noted that more than 7 million Americans, including 60,000 Long Island residents, are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of Americans with Alzheimer’s is projected to double by 2060.

“Every place that lights up teal—whether it’s a skyscraper, a stadium, or a small-town community hall—helps make Alzheimer’s more visible and fosters greater understanding and support for the millions of families affected by the disease,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA).

“These places on Long Island do much more than change the color of a building: they raise awareness and remind everyone affected by Alzheimer’s that they are not alone. We appreciate your participation.”

People can participate too. On Monday, November 2, everyone can join the initiative by wearing teal clothing, displaying the color in their homes or workplaces, or using social media to share information about Alzheimer’s disease and raise awareness.
