Educational program helps seniors eat healthy and save money

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center will host a free wellness education program on July 23 to teach Long Island seniors how to prioritize healthy, nutritious eating by making the most of every food dollar.

The session, titled “Healthy Eating on a Budget,” will take place at 1:00 pm at the AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center, located at 149 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville. People interested in attending must register by calling the Center at the telephone number 631-223-4000.

During the program, registered dietitian Christine McGuire, director of clinical operations at National Enrichment Group, will discuss practical meal planning strategies, smart grocery shopping techniques, and simple ways to optimize your food budget while maintaining a healthy diet.

Attendees will learn how careful planning, choosing economical foods and using nutritious ingredients can help maximize the grocery budget without sacrificing nutritional value or taste.

Good nutrition plays a fundamental role in healthy aging. For older adults, eating a balanced diet helps maintain strength and energy, promotes cardiovascular and bone health, preserves muscle mass, strengthens the immune system, and helps manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Proper nutrition can also benefit brain health and overall cognitive well-being, making it a key element in maintaining independence and quality of life as we age.

“Healthy Eating on a Budget” is part of an ongoing series of free nutrition and wellness programs for seniors organized by the AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education and Resource Center.

Advance registration is required; To register for the July 23 program, call the Center at 631-223-4000.
