The Honduran “El Monstruo Verde” is advancing firmly in the Concacaf competition after its brilliant victory at the Francisco Morazán stadium in San Pedro Sula.
The Honduran Marathón beat Nicaraguan Real Estelí 3-0 in a group “B” match and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Central American Cup.
Real Estelí led the game better in the first fifteen minutes, with two clear arrivals at the Marathón area, the second with a slightly deflected right hand from Josué Quijano into the goal defended by Jonathan Rougier.
Marathón, who was forced to win, began to show fang and in the 21st minute the Estelí defense prevented the Argentine Brian Farioli from scoring, sending the ball to the corner. And in the 34th minute, Real Estelí goalkeeper, John Faust, blocked a left-footed shot from attacker Carlos Argueta, from Marathón.
The Honduran team, which qualified with 7 points, took the lead in the 42nd minute with a goal from Argentine Brian Farioli, who beat Faust with a powerful left-footed shot. The teams went into halftime with a partial home advantage.
In the second half, the Honduran team came out more determined to define the game and in the 53rd minute put the score 2-0 in their favor with a header from Javier Arriaga, finishing off a ball from a corner kick taken by Farioli.
From the 79th minute, Real Estelí, who was left behind with 6 players, played with ten men due to the expulsion of E. Castillo, who had replaced Víctor Casado in the 52nd minute.
Marathón took advantage of the advantage of one more man on the field and in the 90th minute of the match, Moreno, who had entered in the 87th minute, made it 3-0 to seal the classification.
Group “B” of this competition was also made up of the Salvadoran Alianza, leader with 9 points; the Costa Rican Herediano and the Guatemalan Antigua.
The next match of the Marathón’s “El Monstruo Verde” will be hosting the Liga Deportiva Alajuelense of Costa Rica in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Central American Cup scheduled for Thursday, September 10 (9 pm ET), at the Francisco Morazán Stadium in Honduras.
The return match will be on Thursday, September 17 (8:30 pm ET) on the “Tico” field of the Alejandro Morera Soto Stadium.
