Democratic congressmen warn that Trump’s immigration policy threatens the 2026 World Cup

The Hispanic Caucus of Congress (CHC) of the United States, composed of Democratic legislators of Hispanic descent, warned that the immigration policy of the Donald Trump administration threatens the success of the World Cup of Football to be held in the US in 2026.

In a letter sent to the Republican leader and his Secretary of National Security, Kristi Noem, point out that “the Government’s aggressive position” in the field of immigration and security “represents a serious threat to success, public security and international perception” during that football competition.

“With the United States about to be host of the world’s largest sporting event, which is expected to attract more than 6 million international visitors, the CHC demands clarity and accountability to the administration on how it intends to fulfill the responsibilities of the United States as a global host,” they said.

The letter is signed by congressmen such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Maxwell Frost, Greg Casar or Alex Padilla, the senator who held the covers last week when he was expelled by the force of a Noem press conference.

The group said to “fully” support the organization of the 2026 World Cup and the economic and cultural opportunities it offers, but considered that the history of the current executive “suggests that it is not prepared to provide hospitality, accessibility and security that millions of international fans and participants deserve.”

The letter cites the recent climbing of tension in Los Angeles after the migratory raids there, which will be one of the venues of the tournament, or the veto at the entrance and concession of visas to citizens from 12 countries and partial limits to those of another seven, including Cuba and Venezuela.

The CHC said he had requested a government response before June 27 describing their plans for visa facilitation, operations in entry ports and the protection of civil rights during the World Cup, and said that it will supervise it in the coming months as part of its commitment that the tournament is a success for all those involved.

The World Cup will take place from June 11, 2026 to July 19, in the United States, Mexico and Canada, two countries to which Washington has reproached to take insufficient measures to control the irregular migration flow.

The aggressive migratory raids of the Trump government are one of the factors that are being used for the lazy sale of tickets that so far is having the 2025 Club World Cup, another event organized by FIFA, the highest governing body of football, which started on June 14 in the US.
