Democratic assemblyman Steve Stern, a member of the New York State Assembly, who represents District 10 of Long Island (includes areas of Melville, Huntington and others in the counties of Nassau and Suffolk), addresses our Hispanic community to offer a message of defense and firm support in front of the anti -immigration policy of the federal government.
«With the increase in the number of adequately documented incidents on how the Customs Immigration and Control Service (ICE) stalks already legal residents in our community, I join the growing number of defenders, already common American legal experts who are worried.
These actions have infused fear in our community, and go beyond legitimate efforts to deport criminals and those who represent a threat to the security and well -being of our communities.
Making raids with residents who are legally here, who meet the dates of judicial appearances and work to support their families, who pay taxes and seek a better future for themselves and their children is not only unacceptable, but also violates our values as Americans.
This threatens our historical principles and endangers our local economy by making young students have terror to go to school, that employees are afraid to go to work, and that parents are reluctant to make purchases and go to pray with their families.
Of course there may be an effective effort to capture true criminals to keep safe families, and not separate them without due process.
For many years, I have seen in person the outstanding men and women in the second seal of the Suffolk County Police Department and our local lifeguards join our community of immigrants to form associations, develop confidence and understanding, and ensure that all people feel safe in our town.
The current indiscriminate intimidation by the federal government betrays those American efforts and ideals. It generates fear and distrust in our communities.
I strongly recommend my neighbors to communicate with their federal representatives, regardless of the party, to express that chaos is not a measure, that threats are unacceptable and that constitutional protections housed by our founders are not optional.
Although there must be a coherent and significant measure of security at the borders and to keep the criminals violent outside our streets, which is happening right now in our streets threatens the foundations of our democracy and simply goes against the Americans ».
