A little Spanish, a little English and a lot of rhythm: Jay Music presents “Mile Away”

Being “a mile away” from someone can feel very far away… or become the inspiration for a song. Jay Music plays precisely with that distance in “Mile Away”, his new urban pop single in Spanglish, where he mixes Spanish, English and Afro sounds with the energy and versatility that characterize the Guatemalan artist.

After surpassing 2 million views with “La Ventanita (Remix)” and sharing “Contigo” with Panamanian Jimmy Bad Boy, Jay Music continues to explore new sounds while preparing LEGACY, his first studio album. We spoke with the artist about “Mile Away”, his passion for experimenting, the artists he dreams of collaborating with and what he hopes to leave behind with his music. Keep reading the full interview.

“Mile Away” mixes Spanish and English and has a very particular urban pop vibe. How did the idea of making this song in Spanglish come about and what did you want to convey with that language combination?

I wanted to convey versatility, which is something that defines me in music. I am an artist who handles different musical colors without losing my urban essence. I have done corridos, trap, urban tropical and reggaeton, and in this case I wanted to bring a pop sound with an Afro touch. It’s a mix of a little bit of everything.

I decided to mix Spanish and English because I had never made a song in English and I wanted to do something different, like Pitbull does, with songs in Spanish and verses in English. I think it’s a topic that people can identify with because it talks about missing a person who is far away. I know people are going to connect with the song.

In your latest releases you have gone through different sounds and fusions. What are you looking for musically at this stage of your career that maybe you weren’t looking for when you started?

Now I know myself as an artist. I know how I want to sound and what I want to convey, but no single is similar to the other. I always like to bring something different, a refreshing concept. I feel like this song sounds very different from the singles I’ve released this year.

What I’m looking for is for people to see that I can develop in different ways and be versatile. We are doing different urban fusions and testing new concepts. The video is also completely based on artificial intelligence, so it is also a new visual proposal.

You come from “La Ventanita (Remix)”, which exceeded 2 million views, and after “Contigo” with Jimmy Bad Boy. How have you experienced this growth and what has it meant to you to see your music beginning to reach markets outside of Guatemala?

I feel very happy because I am a person who, when I set out something, tries to accomplish it, no matter how long it takes. I am passionate about what I do. I visualized it, I dreamed it and I am fulfilling it.

More than winning an award or a Grammy, I want people to enjoy and connect with my music. Obviously, who doesn’t like to receive recognition, but my purpose is for people to know me and connect with my songs.

Music is a single language. It’s vibe, connection and a way to find our feelings. I’m so happy that people are connecting and that my music is being heard internationally.

Your music combines reggaeton, tropical sounds, pop and romantic lyrics. Is there a genre or artist that you still feel like experimenting with that the public doesn’t expect from you?

I like music in general and I have done a little bit of everything. A super varied album is coming, but I would really like to do something in bachata. It is a genre that I have not yet explored and it catches my attention.

I would love to work with someone like Romeo Santos or Prince Royce. I also really like kizomba, especially an artist like Daniel Santacruz. I am open to working with whoever the opportunity presents itself and to continue growing musically.

You are preparing LEGACY, your first studio album. What do you want this album to say about Jay Music that you haven’t yet been able to tell through your singles?

The truth is that I have told almost everything, but anyone who has listened to my music knows that I have songs based on my own experiences or on the stories of third parties.

My music is based a lot on energy, dancing and having a good time. On the album there are songs about a breakup I had, like “Me Dejaste Amar,” and also a cumbia about a person who was very important in my life.

There is also a motivational song, which is the intro of the album, about achieving what one sets out to do with discipline and fighting for one’s dreams. There is also spite, disco and reggaeton music, with messages more focused on dance. It is a very varied album that covers different styles and emotions.

The title LEGACY speaks of legacy. For an artist who is still building his path, what does it mean to you to leave a legacy and what would you like people to remember about your music?

I’m just starting out and I’m not a world-renowned artist yet, but for me music is timeless and has no expiration date. I think we all want to build something that lasts and leave a legacy.

That’s why the title LEGACY: because music is forever. Big or small, I want to leave my musical legacy and something that can stay with people.

But, to be very honest, I want to be remembered as a good person, more than as a good artist. Artists come and go and can go out of fashion, but I think being a good person lasts forever. They have instilled good values in me and that is how I would like to be remembered.

After everything that’s happened in 2026, what are you most excited about next for Jay Music?

I’m excited to go to the Latin Grammys because I’ve never had the opportunity to go. I’m also excited to continue releasing music and all the plans we are preparing for the album release in 2027.

I have many musical plans and collaborations. I want to return to my country, go on a successful tour and present the album with many concerts.

I also want to take Colombia as a base. I know that it is a world reference in urban music and I have an audience that follows me there. I want to continue conquering that country and cover Central America and Latin America with the release of the album. That is my purpose in the short, medium and long term.
