The United States soccer team maintained its perfect pace on the FIFA Date by beating Chile 4-2 in an international friendly match played in Saint Louis that unfortunately ended in a fight.
Chile fell despite being up 2-1 at the beginning of the restart, in a duel that ended with a fight after an altercation between Leandro Hernández and Chris Richards in added time.
Chilean “La Roja” lost its second friendly in a row played on North American soil, after the 0-1 loss suffered in Toronto against Canada, when it ended up with nine men due to the expulsions of Gabriel Suazo and Lucas Cepeda.
And in this Tuesday’s match, Diego Ulloa and Maximiliano Gutiérrez gave them hope with a momentary South American advantage, but the US reacted well to end up celebrating with goals from Sebastian Berhalter, Julian Hall, Chris Richards and Mathis Albert.
A pure goal
The United States struck first, with the second consecutive goal by Sebastian Berhalter, son of former US coach Gregg Berhalter, after a great personal play by Sergiño Dest.
Chile knew how to wait for its moment and turned the score around with two goals, coming just before half-time and as soon as they returned to the field in the second half.
The 1-1 came in a chaotic action in the penalty area after a corner from the right wing. After a series of rebounds, Ulloa found light to score the goal that tied the match.
If the first goal was the result of a messy play, the second was a work of art. Maximiliano Gutiérrez ran down the left wing, cut back and unleashed a powerful right hand from the edge of the area that gave American goalkeeper Chris Brady no option.
Chile’s joy was short-lived, because in the 51st minute, youth player Julian Hall scored his second consecutive goal with the American team to change the momentum of the match, and in the 72nd minute, defender Chris Richards took advantage of a cross from Berhalter to complete the comeback.
Thus the Chilean team had suffered the American push and it was the credit of goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux if the “Stars and Stripes” team had not been able to score before.
Mathis Albert, another youngster launched by Mauricio Pochettino in this friendly cycle, completed the victory with the final 4-2 in added time.
With nothing at stake, when the game was about to conclude, a fight broke out when Leandro Hernández approached goalkeeper Brian Schwake, who had the ball in his hands lying on the ground, and hit him lightly with his boot.
Chris Richards confronted him and a fight arose that resulted in a yellow card for both players. Embarrassing ending for Chile that must change its bad image left in these friendly matches.
