New York will have one of its biggest Halloween celebrations this year with the return of Trick-or-Streets, bringing free activities to 160 car-free streets and squares in all five boroughs during October. Children, families and neighbors will be able to participate in trick-or-treating, games, face painting, live music and entertainment.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and the commissioner of the city Department of Transportation (NYC DOT), Mike Flynn, announced the return of the program, which this year reaches its largest number of participating spaces.
“New York celebrates Halloween like no other city, and this year we’re offering New Yorkers a bigger, spookier, and more fun celebration than ever before. We’re opening 160 streets and squares for trick-or-treating, games, music, and fun together,” Mamdani said.
Trick-or-Streets will bring together community organizations, schools and cultural groups to offer Halloween and fall activities in different neighborhoods throughout the month.
Among the new features this year are the free guided tours of the Municipal Art Society of New York, which will allow you to learn about the history, architecture and public spaces of some of the participating neighborhoods.
Street Lab will also bring activities to the vicinity of several public schools, including PS 59, PS 28 and PS 159 in the Bronx; PS 18, PS 137 and Dock Street School for STEAM Studies in Brooklyn; Community Health Academy of the Heights and PS 102 in Manhattan, and PS 95Q in Queens.
Main events include Hillel Plaza in Brooklyn on Thursday, October 22, from 2 to 6 pm. On Staten Island, Water Street Open Street will be held on Saturday, October 24, from 12 to 5 pm.
In Queens, Austin Street Open Street will welcome families on Sunday, October 25, from 2 to 5 pm, while in Manhattan there will be activities at Canal Open Street and Division Plaza on Wednesday, October 28, from 3 to 7 pm.
On Halloween, Saturday, October 31, James Baldwin Plaza in the Bronx will have a celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Events will include, depending on location, costume contests, live music, face painting, games and other activities for people of various ages and abilities. NYC DOT will also distribute 75,000 pieces of candy during the celebrations.
