A sea of red caps and gowns filled the Amityville Memorial High School football field on June 27, as the Class of 2026 made history by becoming the first graduating class to bear the name “Amityville Tide,” marking a new era for the school community during its graduation ceremony.
Under a changing sky that held just long enough to allow the event to conclude, graduates paraded across the stage to receive their diplomas as family, friends, and faculty and staff celebrated the moment.
The ceremony honored hundreds of graduates for their academic achievements, perseverance and dedication throughout their careers at this Suffolk County high school on Long Island, NY.
The student with the best academic average (“Valedictorian”), Cristian Chicas, and the student with the second best average (“Salutatorian”), Elidi Laquidara, addressed their classmates reflecting on resilience and the path taken until reaching graduation day.
“We all took a step forward, not because we were certain we would succeed, but because we believed we could do it,” Chicas said. “With the next chapter of our lives on the horizon, we have much to look forward to and dreams to achieve.”
For his part, Laquidara stated to his companions, “They are capable of achieving anything they want; “They just need to put in the time and effort, and they will be unstoppable.”
«We all have the freedom to imagine and dream of what we will become, but right now we are all together for the last time; so let’s enjoy this moment,” he emphasized.

Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. John Cardone; School Superintendent Dr. Gina Talbert; and Class President Sage Stephens also gave speeches recognizing the achievements of the Class of 2026 and the strength of the school community.
“There’s something very special about being from Amityville,” Dr. Cardone said. “This beautiful diversity is what helped prepare them for the world beyond high school. To quote American poet Amanda Gorman: There is always light, if we are brave enough to see it. To the Class of 2026: go out into the world and find that light; and when they do, they shine. Please know that you will always have a home here with us at Amityville Memorial High School.”
“Your diploma represents much more than academic achievement,” said Dr. Talbert. «It represents resilience, determination and bravery, and no one can ever take that away from them. Have the courage to pursue your dreams, the humility to continue learning, and the kindness to help others rise as you move forward.”

During the ceremony, the Amityville Memorial High School band and choir performed musical pieces that enhanced the festive nature of the occasion.
Assistant Principals Dr. Maria Vineyard, Angelica Rodriguez and Mary Frances Hopkins also recognized graduates who earned academic distinctions, including the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, the AP Capstone diploma and commitment to service in the US Armed Forces.
As the first class to graduate under the “Amityville Tide” identity – formerly known as the “Amityville Warriors” – the Class of 2026 leaves a legacy defined by transition, pride and a new tradition.
The Amityville Union Free School District congratulates the Class of 2026 and wishes its graduates continued success, happiness and fulfillment as they embark on their next journey.
