The Green Machine Marching Band from Brentwood High School, Long Island, NY, proudly marched down Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC, on the recent Memorial Day commemoration, performing before millions of Americans live on national television as part of an event to celebrate Memorial Day and the 250th anniversary of the United States.
“The excitement and deep sense of pride I felt watching our students perform in our nation’s capital cannot be fully expressed in words,” said Superintendent Wanda Ortiz-Rivera.
«Their presence was impeccable, their pride unmistakable, and they represented Brentwood with excellence, discipline and heart. “It was an unforgettable moment that filled me with gratitude and revealed the extraordinary spirit of Brentwood,” he said.
The Brentwood High School band known as “Green Machine” was one of only two bands selected in the entire country to perform live on national TV, and participated in the opening ceremony.
It’s been an impressive year for band director Joseph Sitler, who will retire in June after being involved with the group for 39 years; initially, as a student in 1986.
This historic band took first place in its division at the New York State Field Band Conference last October and, in previous years, has performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
