Live it LI: LEGO Animal Exhibit at Old Westbury Gardens

Live it LI: LEGO Animal Exhibition
From May 15 / 10 am – 6 pm

LEGO animals take over Long Island’s Old Westbury Gardens this spring.

Sean Kenney’s “Nature Connects” exhibit brings animals, plants and ecosystems to life throughout the historic gardens using thousands of LEGO bricks.

If your child is so enthralled by LEGOs, you’re in luck. The site will once again become home to something a little unexpected: life-size animals, flowers in full bloom and garden scenes, all built entirely out of LEGO.

The exhibition will be open until September 7, an outdoor display that combines art, nature and a large dose of childhood nostalgia.

One of the most fun parts of the exhibit is that the installations are scattered throughout the property, so you find them as you walk: sometimes in the open grass areas, other times hidden among the garden paths.

You will see a fox stopped mid-step, a group of brightly colored flowers or a butterfly suspended in mid-flight. At first glance, they seem playful; but then you start to notice how detailed they are and become fascinated. Imagine how exciting this is for a LEGO-obsessed child.

Everything in the exhibition refers to an interesting idea: that nature works in the same way as LEGOs. Each piece depends on another and, if one is removed, the entire structure is altered. It’s not just a science and LEGO building lesson, but also something we can all reflect on a little more in relation to the world at large.

“At Old Westbury Gardens, we believe that meaningful encounters with nature can spark curiosity and creativity at any age,” said Maura Brush, president and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens.
