New Yorkers with arduous task of removing accumulated snow after historic blizzard

At 3 p.m. on Monday, New Yorkers began the arduous task of removing the snow that accumulated after the historic winter blizzard that painted New York City white. Long Island this Sunday, February 22 and Monday, February 23.

National Weather Service (NWS) officials remind the community that “Heavy, wet snow is no joke!” and that “shoveling (snow) can strain the back and even the heart.”

They urge you to take these tips into account:

– Dress in layers and cover exposed skin
– Stay hydrated
– Lift small amounts at a time
– Take frequent breaks

If you feel chest pain, dizziness or tiredness, stop immediately!

New York City experienced its first blizzard since 2016, leaving a huge amount of snow, causing travel bans, school closures and the declaration of a state of emergency by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

How much snow has fallen? At least 15 inches (38 cm) of snow was reported in several locations according to NWS information (as of 7:00 a.m. February 23).

– Crown Heights, Brooklyn: 18 inches as of 7:42 a.m.
– Mott Haven, Bronx: 17.9 inches as of 7:15 a.m.
– Williamsburg, Brooklyn: 17.4 inches as of 7:50 a.m.
– Washington Heights, Manhattan: 17.1 inches as of 7:30 a.m.
– Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn: 17 inches as of 7:02 a.m.
– Coney Island, Brooklyn: 16 inches as of 5:43 a.m.
– Central Park, Manhattan: 15.1 inches until 7 a.m.
– LaGuardia Airport, Queens: 15.1 inches until 7 a.m.
– JFK Airport, Queens: 15 inches until 7 a.m.
– Astoria, Queens: 15 inches until 8:19 a.m.
– Elmhurst, Queens: 15 inches until 6:20 a.m.
– Bay Ridge, Brooklyn: 13.8 inches as of 7:54 a.m.
– Grasmere, Staten Island: 12.7 inches as of 3:30 a.m.
– Little Neck, Queens: 11 inches until 5:30 a.m.

All public schools in NYC were canceled on February 23 with no remote classes, giving children a snow day for the first time since 2019. Schools return with in-person classes this Tuesday, February 24.
