Hundreds of people gathered at a vigil held in New York in honor of nurse Alex Pretti, who was shot dead by immigration agents in Minneapolis last Saturday.
The event, called Thursday night by several organizations, including the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), took place in front of the NY Harbor Healthcare System veterans hospital, overlooking the East River.
The decision to hold the vigil in this hospital complex is not coincidental, since Pretti, who died at the age of 37, worked in the intensive care unit of a veterans hospital in Minneapolis (Minnesota).
Despite the freezing temperatures and the snow that still persists in the streets of the Big Apple, almost a thousand people gathered in front of the hospital to leave electric candles on an improvised altar on which there were also photographs of Renee Good, killed by an ICE agent in Minneapolis weeks before Pretti’s murder.
On the altar, some of those present also placed images of people detained by the immigration authorities, as could be seen in various media outlets and the coverage of the EFE agency.
Meanwhile, several of the attendees carried signs with phrases such as “Nurses ask for justice and civil rights for all”, “Abolish ICE” or “Justice for Pretti.”

The family of the nurse, born in the state of Illinois, confirmed after his death that the man had participated in protests in Minneapolis after immigration agents killed Renee Good.
Recently, US President Donald Trump shared on his social networks a video recorded eleven days before Pretti’s death showing a previous altercation between him and some federal agents.
This new video was released a day after CNN revealed that Pretti was in the crosshairs of immigration agents before he was shot down on the streets of Minneapolis.
According to the American media, the nurse ended up with a broken rib after the altercation captured in the video and federal agents had begun to “document details” about him.
