To mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Lia DeGennaro, a senior at West Babylon High School on Long Island, created a special banner to display at John F. Kennedy Elementary School, where her mother works, providing students with a meaningful visual reminder of that day and linking the anniversary to important lessons about peace, kindness and unity.
Lia designed the banner with the intention of honoring the significance of September 11, 2001 while creating something that could be integrated into the elementary school educational experience. Since her mother, Lisa, is a teacher at said center, the project had a valuable
especially personal.
“I wanted to create something that would serve as a reminder of 9/11 and help tie that day to the lessons the students were learning,” he said.
Throughout the week, students at John F. Kennedy Elementary School participated in age-appropriate lessons and activities focused on the themes of peace, kindness and unity.
Teachers used the anniversary as an opportunity to help students understand the importance of caring for others, supporting their community, and recognizing everyday heroes who make a difference.
