Medicare fraud in elderly homes is identified as the fraud of the month of July, according to the New York Statewide Senior Action Council (Statewide), a 53 -year -old non -profit organization dedicated to meet the needs and well -being of the approximately 2.5 million older people in our New York state.
The fraud of the month according to Statewide is a component of the Medicare patrol for the elderly (SMP), the final resource for older adults and caregivers at the state level to detect, prevent and denounce fraud, errors and abuses in medical care. Statewide is the assignee and administrator of this federal program in New York.
«Medicare generally does not pay for long -term attention in nursing homes. However, Medicare part A covers the necessary medical care in a specialized nursing center (SNF). Due to the complexity of SNF’s coverage, Medicare is often an objective of fraud, errors and abuse, ”said María Álvarez, executive director of the Action Council for the Elderly of the State of New York.
“We have compiled a list of what older people should look for Medicare fraud in nursing homes,” he added.
So what can the elderly and their medical care providers do to stop fraud in care in the elderly? Take note:
1. Check the summary notice of Medicare (MSN) or the explanation of benefits (EOB):
– Check that the services invoiced to Medicare coincide with what was really received.
– Look for duplicate charges.
– Be attentive to not proportioned services or therapy.
– Check if there are specialized nursing charges after a discharge date.
2. Do not sign unwanted forms
– These include anticipated beneficiaries (ABN), Medicare (Moon) or any form that is blank.
3. Work with the doctor
– Determine if the services are medically necessary and how long the services must be provided, depending on the condition and the recovery objectives.
4. Never accept gifts for choosing an installation
– As money, gift or edible cards, in exchange for choosing a home of the elderly.
5. Poor care report
-To the senior patrol of Medicare of the State of New York (SMP) or the Organization for the Improvement of the Quality of Centering Centered on the Beneficiary Family (BFCC-QIO)
