Plant Powered Metro New York (PPMNY) has opened the inscriptions for its popular health empowerment program, Power Powered Jumstart, offering 3 virtual groups this autumn: two JUMPTart in English and one of Spanish health challenge.
The program provides participants with the knowledge, skills and community support necessary to adopt an integral diet based on plants, which has proven drastically improving health results and general well -being.
Research shows that an integral diet based on plants is a powerful tool to prevent, treat and even reverse many of chronic diseases that prevail in our communities.
By focusing on comprehensive and unprocessed foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes and integral cereals, this way of eating addresses the background causes of diseases and promotes sustainable health improvements.
Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and obesity, disproportionately affect New Yorkers in color and low -income communities.
In a report published earlier this year, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene of New York City reported that chronic and diet -related diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer, were the main causes of death and premature death in all racial and ethnic groups of the city.
In 2021, chronic diseases caused more than 40% of premature deaths and more than 30,000 New Yorkers of any age died from these diseases.
In areas such as the south of the Bronx, the Brooklyn and Harlem center, the hospitalization rates for diabetes are 2 to 3 times higher than in the richest neighborhoods, while heart disease remains the main cause of premature death throughout the city, and black and Latin New Yorkers face greater risks and worst results.
“In some New York neighborhoods, the burden of chronic diseases is a daily reality. These health disparities not only have an impact on the quality of life, but also contribute to billions in sanitary costs that could be avoided,” said Lianna Levine Reisner, founding director of PPMNY.
“Jumpstart empowers people from all origins to resume control of their health with the support of the community, tutoring and delicious plant foods, he added.
The JUMPTart program has helped thousands of people throughout the metropolitan area to prevent and treat chronic diseases. A recent evaluation carried out with the University of Health Sciences of Suny Downstate showed significant improvements in the nutrition knowledge of the participants, energy levels, mental clarity and BMI.
98 percent said it would recommend it to other people. The program also helped participants overcome myths about the cost and cultural relevance of the plant -based integral diet.
In the program, participants immerse themselves in live weekly sessions, cooking demonstrations, mentoring and support of related groups, with access to culturally relevant resources through the PPMNY mobile application.
«I see daily how lifestyle choices directly affect the health results of patients. Programs such as health challenge, which focus on integral nutrition based on plants, can make a deep difference, not only on reducing blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, but also on the empowerment of people to assume an active role in their well -being, ”said Dr. Hugo Ortega, who specializes in internal medicine in Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx. The first -generation Ecuadorian and Dominican doctor is also a plant health graduate based on plants.
«I have seen the inequalities and health struggles facing Latinos and I wanted to do something to help my community. That is why I got involved in PPMNY, who already had a great program for Angloplants, ”said Aifra Ruiz, organizer of PPMNY’s Hispanic health empowerment.
“Together, we develop health challenge, a Spanish program that takes into account Latin basic traditions and foods, with vibrant foods based on plants and full of Latin flavors,” he emphasizes.
