Nassau County legislators and Long Island partners announce a series of Earth Day community cleanups in Freeport and Baldwin.
In recognition of April 22 as “Earth Day,” Nassau Legislature Alternate Minority Leader Debra Mulé is partnering with her government colleagues and local stakeholders to host cleanup events throughout District 6.
The event scheduled for Saturday, April 25 begins at 9:00 a.m. at Milburn Creek in Baldwin, followed by a 9:30 a.m. cleanup at Silver Lake Park (Baldwin), a 10:00 a.m. gathering at Brookside Preserve (Freeport/Baldwin), and a 10:30 a.m. event at Loft’s Pond Park (Baldwin).
Community partners sponsoring the events include Operation SPLASH, South Shore Conservation Society, Rotary Club of Freeport/Merrick, The Green Army, Girl Scouts of Nassau County (Freeport), the Nassau Environmental Rotaract, students from Freeport and Baldwin high schools, among others.
Ahead of the series of cleanup days, students from the Freeport High School Environmental Justice Club will commemorate “Earth Day” with an all-day cleanup event this Wednesday, April 22 at Milburn Pond.
Garbage bags and rubber gloves will be provided; Participants are encouraged to bring trash canes, rakes, grabbers, stronger gloves, and other complementary tools.
To protect against ticks and other dangers, attendees are encouraged to wear long sleeves, pants, socks and other protective clothing. Participants are also asked to leave their pets at home.
“District 6 is blessed with some of the most beautiful green spaces and aquatic preserves in our region, and it is imperative that each of us do our part to improve and preserve them for future generations,” stated Legislator Mulé.
“I am thrilled to be working with Senator Bynoe, Assemblywoman Griffin, Legislator Scott Davis and so many outstanding community organizations to celebrate Earth Day with this series of community clean-ups… Please join us and get to work as we pay tribute to our planet through this service project,” stressed the Democratic official representing Freeport.
Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to RSVP with the office of Deputy Deputy Minority Leader Mulé by calling 516-571-6206 or emailing [email protected].
