With joy, emotion and a clear message of hope, this Saturday the new mammography truck of Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) was officially inaugurated, during a community event held at Evergreen Charter School.
The day was led by Betty Rodríguez, founder of the Betty’s Breast Cancer Foundation organization, who highlighted the importance of facilitating access to preventive medical examinations, especially for Hispanic women.
«We were lucky and the fortune to serve our first patient at 8:10 in the morning. We cut the tape … It was something wonderful, ”said Rodríguez excitedly.
The event was organized in collaboration with Evergreen Charter School and the Circle of Hispanity, entities that have worked together with the Foundation for more than six years promoting the early detection of breast cancer.
“From 2024 to 2025 we have seen an unimaginable increase in the number of women diagnosed with cancer,” Rodríguez warned. “That is why we have to pay attention to our body, because when we feel something different and we attend it on time, we can save lives.”
In addition to the ribbon cutting, the day had health services, support from the Hispanic Counseling Center, members of the Board of the Foundation and volunteers committed to breast health education.
Rodríguez shared that he has worked with the hospital for more than 15 years promoting the use of the old mammography truck. «Although he was old and small, he loved him because he fulfilled his function. But now, having this new truck with modern technology and being I who opened the door to receive the first patient … It was an honor that I will not forget.

During the event, the fourth edition of the Annual Walk of the Breast Cancer Foundation was also announced, which will take place on October 4, 2025 in Eisenhower Park.
“You never know when the doctor can tell him: ‘You have cancer.’ That is why we have to educate, support us and make mammography in time, ”he said. “These walks are not just events, they are spaces to raise awareness, unite families and save lives.”
