Thalia Spanish Theater of Queens celebrates the month of women with an unmissable comedy: “The flight of the pigeons” from February 28 to March 23 in its Sunnyside room, Queens.
Starring Soledad López and Kathy Tejada, the story follows two sixty women who, after meeting a bag full of dirty money, embark on a crazy adventure that challenges the rules of the consumer society. Among unbridled purchases, hilarious situations and moments of deep reflection, the work explores issues such as friendship, unexpected fortune and absurd pressures of the modern world.
The production promises to shake the laughter and emotions of the public with the bilingual comedy written by the prestigious Spanish playwright José Luis Alonso de Santos. With the direction of Héctor Luis Rivera and production of Ángel Gil Orrios, this work combines humor, social criticism and a touch of madness in the purest style of Pedro Almodóvar.
It is no accident that the flight of the pigeons is released during the month of women. The work pays tribute to resilience, audacity and feminine complicity, showing two protagonists who, far from being victims of their age, become heroines of their own history. With an ingenious script and sharp dialogues, it invites the public to laugh, but also to reflect on the stereotypes and expectations that fall on women.
José Luis Alonso de Santos, known for works such as getting down to Moor, once again demonstrates his mastery to combine humor and social criticism. The English version, adapted by Iide Lamartina-Lens, maintains the essence of the original text while making it accessible to a broader audience. For his part, director Héctor Luis Rivera manages to print an agile and visually shocking rhythm, with scenes that remind Almodóvar’s cinema at its expression.
Soledad López and Kathy Tejada, two impeccable trajectory actresses, give life to these women who, with their successes and mistakes, conquer the public from the first moment. His chemistry on stage is palpable and his interpretation manages to perfectly balance comedy and emotionality.
One of the most prominent aspects of this production is its bilingual format. The functions in English will take place on Fridays at 8 pm and on Saturdays at 3 pm, while Spanish functions will take place on Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 4 pm. This duality not only expands the scope of the work, but also reflects the cultural diversity of New York.
