If you are looking for a different plan for September, the Bronx has an agenda that invites you to dance, discover new sounds and celebrate the cultural richness of the borough. The Bronx Music Hall is preparing a month full of live music, salsa, Afro-Cuban jazz, blues, poetry and proposals for the whole family.
The highlight for lovers of Latin rhythms will arrive on September 12 with BAILA!: Latin Music Dance Party, a party that promises to turn the dance floor into the heart of the night. The Bronx Charanga will bring salsa, cha-cha-cha and other classic Latin music rhythms to the stage. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the party will begin at 7 pm Admission is $20.
But the celebration doesn’t end there. On September 13, the Sunday Salon: Deaf Music & Poetry will offer an unusual artistic experience with free admission. The Deaf Music Ensemble, made up of deaf and hard of hearing artists, will show how rhythm and emotion can also be expressed through American Sign Language, dance and movement. The program will also include a screening of Deaf Jam (2011), a documentary about poetry in ASL.
For blues fans, on September 19 there will be a night dedicated to one of its great figures: Reverend Gary Davis. The Bronx Rising! series will feature a screening of Harlem Street Singer and then a concert with singer-songwriter Monica Hope and guitarist Kelvyn Bell. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the show will begin at 7 pm Admission is $15.
And if jazz is your thing, mark September 24 on your calendar. Nuevas Voces: Emerging Voices in Latin Jazz will bring together the Diego Hedez Quintet and Latin Grammy-nominated trumpeter Kalí Rodríguez-Peña for an evening of Afro-Cuban sounds, contemporary jazz and improvisation. The concert starts at 8 pm and tickets are $15.
The agenda also offers a free happy hour with DJ Mike & Friends on September 3 and a family afternoon with the songs of Woody Guthrie on September 27.
So get your dancing shoes ready, gather the family, or invite your friends over: September is coming to the Bronx with music for everyone and plenty of reasons to get out of the house and enjoy it live.
