Move forward at a steady pace. Costa Rican Deportivo Saprissa comfortably beat Guatemalan Deportivo Mixco 3-0, maintaining their perfect streak of three wins in the same number of games played in the group stage and obtaining a ticket to the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Central American Cup.
The “purple monster” finished the game in just half an hour with goals from Panamanian attacker Newton Williams in the 3rd minute, from winger Gerson Torres in the 7th minute, and from defender Kendall Waston in the 32nd minute, against an opponent who offered little resistance and when he was able to get close to the opposing goal he ran into the hands of goalkeeper Abraham Madriz.
With this victory, Saprissa reached 9 points as the leader of Group “C”, followed by the Honduran Olimpia (6 points), and then the Panamanian Alianza, the Panamanian Umecit and the Guatemalan Mixco appear still without points. In this format, each team plays a total of 4 games in the group stage (2 at home and 2 away).
In Tuesday’s match, played at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium, in San José, the local team put the game on track from the 3rd minute when Gerson Torres threw a precise cross for the “canalero” striker Newton Williams to open the scoring with an accurate header.
The second goal fell quickly after a good play by Nicaraguan winger Bancy Hernández, who escaped down the left wing and served the ball into the area, where Gerson Torres only had to push the ball into the net in the 7th minute.
The Costa Rican team continued to dominate the game and in the 32nd minute the tall defender Kendall Waston appeared to make it 3-0 with a header from a corner kick.
The result could have been bigger but a goal by Gerson Torres was disallowed for an offside error.
Deportivo Mixco came closer with a header from Lynner García that crashed into the vertical, in what was their clearest scoring opportunity.
In the second half the local team, led by coach Hernán Medford, dedicated themselves to managing the advantage and tried to increase the score, without success.
The Guatemalan team made a couple of long-distance shots that were successfully contained by goalkeeper Abraham Madriz.
