Nassau opens 4 Cooling Centers to protect itself from the strong heat

To help Long Island residents stay safe during excessive heat, Nassau County Cooling Centers are open at the following four locations:

Locations staffed by the Parks Department

– Cantiague Park

480 W John Street, Hicksville
Open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

– Mitchel Field Athletic Complex

1 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, Uniondale
Open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

–Wantagh Park

1 King Road, Wantagh
Open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location with Sheriff’s Department personnel

Former Nassau County Family Court

1200 Old Country Road, Westbury
Open 24/7

According to specialists from the National Weather Service, hot weather is forecast in the New York area at least for this Wednesday, May 20, and the beginning of Thursday, May 21.

Temperatures are expected to range from the high 80s to even the low 90s on Long Island. By the end of the afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop that could be intense, with brief heavy downpours and gusts of wind, according to media reports.

Authorities from the Nassau County Office of Hispanic Affairs emphasize to the local community that the “Cooling Centers” are open to help residents stay safe during periods of heat.

People are advised to take precautions, stay hydrated and check on elderly relatives, neighbors and anyone who may need help.
