Mount Sinai South Nassau has earned the 2026 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, placing it among the best hospitals in the country for patient safety. Only 10 percent of hospitals nationwide managed to achieve this distinction.
To determine the award winners, Healthgrades—an independent online platform aimed at helping consumers compare healthcare providers—evaluated the risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide, based on 13 patient safety indicators; Each of these indicators represents a serious and preventable complication.
Mount Sinai South Nassau excelled “by preventing infections, medical errors and other preventable conditions,” Healthgrades noted. Only 438 hospitals—of the almost 4,500 nationwide that were automatically evaluated by Healthgrades—obtained this highest award.
«Our entire team – doctors, nurses and support staff – focuses on patient safety every day. We have made quality care a priority and are constantly reviewing ways to improve,” said Dr. Adhi Sharma, president of Mount Sinai South Nassau.
“I am extraordinarily proud of our team, made up of more than 3,500 healthcare professionals, for this achievement, and I thank them for their dedication to the well-being of our patients,” he added.
“Achieving this truly requires the efforts of everyone at the hospital, especially our nursing and medical staff,” said Dr. Alan Wong, chief medical officer and senior vice president of Medical Affairs. «And this does not happen overnight; “We have been working for several years to achieve this goal.”
It should be noted that the Mount Sinai South Nassau Advisory Board has prioritized patient safety for several years. “We are very pleased to see that the efforts of staff and management have paid off,” said Joseph Fennessy, member of the Mount Sinai Health System Board of Trustees and former president of the Board of Directors of Mount Sinai South Nassau.
“When you have to go to a hospital—whether for an emergency or for a scheduled procedure—you often feel some anxiety. Our patients can rest a little easier knowing that patient safety is a priority at Mount Sinai South Nassau,” he stressed.
Lower risk
Healthgrades’ annual analysis revealed significant gaps in performance between the nation’s highest- and lowest-performing facilities, making it increasingly important for consumers to seek care at a hospital with the best safety ratings.
During the 2022-2024 study period, 167,228 preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for nearly 78% of all incidents.
According to Healthgrades, patients treated at Mount Sinai South Nassau and other award-winning facilities had a significantly lower risk of experiencing these major complications:
– Falls within the hospital that resulted in a fracture (52.4% less likely).
– Lung collapse due to a procedure performed in or around the chest (57.5% less likely).
– Catheter-related, hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (67.8% less likely).
– Pressure ulcers or bedsores acquired in the hospital (71.9% less likely).
The statistics above, calculated using the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award methodology, are based primarily on data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review file, produced by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services; the latter constitutes a nationwide data set on inpatient stays (Medicare Part A) in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.
Mount Sinai South Nassau has also received Healthgrades’ “America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Interventions” award for the third consecutive year.
In addition, it has earned numerous other quality and safety awards, including 10 “High Performer” ratings from US News & World Report in the areas of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, myocardial infarction, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, pneumonia, maternity, and leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
