More than 500 members of the Brentwood, Long Island community gathered Saturday, April 18, for a breast cancer awareness walk that honored survivors, remembered loved ones and raised funds for scholarships for local students.
This year’s walk held at Brentwood High School was dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth “Lila” Marrero, a close friend of Board of Education President Eileen Felix and a well-known member of our community, who recently passed away (April 8); This fact added a meaningful and reflective tone to the day’s events.
The inspiring Brentwood Breast Cancer Walk 2026 featured emotional speeches and testimonies from three local survivors with deep community ties:
– Michael Landesberg, executive chef and partner of Jackson Hall Bar & Grill;
– Delia Melendez-Leon, Brentwood alumna and current high school math teacher; and
– Jessenia Mejia, parent of a Brentwood student and motivational speaker.
The event was made possible through the efforts of volunteers, sponsors and donors, whose contributions helped unite the community in a day focused on awareness, remembrance and hope, while funding vital student scholarships.
It should be noted that October is known as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”; However, those who receive this diagnosis face an ongoing battle that should not be forgotten.
Therefore, this meaningful event organized by the Brentwood School District brought together our Long Island people to support each other, support education, and reinforce the message that no one faces breast cancer alone.
