AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement regarding Proposition 50 of the Master Plan on Aging.
“The numbers — and the need — are undeniable. More than 3.5 million residents are now 65 or older, and poverty among seniors has increased nearly 50% in the last decade.
Meanwhile, thousands of New York seniors remain stuck on waiting lists for essential services, including transportation to medical appointments, food deliveries, adult day programs and respite care.
The solution is clear and cost-efficient: provide full funding for services for older adults.
Today, less than one percent of the state budget goes to the New York State Office on Aging, even though every $15 million invested would generate $50 million in Medicaid savings. The cost of not acting is far greater than the financial and long-term consequences of acting.
AARP New York urges state leaders to adopt Proposition 50 and fully fund the services older adults and their caregivers depend on.
The Master Plan for Aging was a promise to the residents of the state; now it must be fulfilled. New York seniors cannot afford any more delays.”
