PONCIA returns to the Thalia Spanish Theater in Queens

PONCIA returns by public request. This time you can’t miss it! 90 years after the murder of Federico García Lorca, the work and legacy of the great Granada poet are still valid. For this reason, the Thalia Spanish Theatre, the only Hispanic theater in Queens, is once again betting on PONCIA, by the Spanish playwright Luis Luque Cabrera, one of the leading figures of contemporary Spanish dramaturgy.

The play stars the multi-award-winning actress Soledad López, under the direction of Ángel Gil Orrios. It is presented in Spanish with English supertitles.

Poncia is the iconic maid in The House of Bernarda Alba, García Lorca’s last work, which the author finished shortly before being murdered on August 19, 1936.

Silent witness to the conflicts and tensions within that family, Poncia plays a key role as intermediary between Bernarda and her daughters. In addition, he is the main link between the Alba family and the outside world.

“It is an extraordinary production. We presented it last May and June, and it was very well received. In fact, it has won three LATA awards (Latin Alternative Theater Awards). We are putting it on again for four weeks because there were people who missed it and also university students who are now starting the new course. It is a very good opportunity to learn about García Lorca’s text (La casa de Bernarda Alba), on which Poncia is based. That is why we wanted to pay tribute to him with this work,” said Gil Orrios, a deep connoisseur of the universe. Lorca.

In a demonstration of stage mastery, the Spanish actress Soledad López plays several characters: the selfless and faithful maid, Adela, the grandmother María Josefa and, of course, Bernarda Alba.

As a witness to family dramas, Poncia offers a new perspective on events and addresses topics such as suicide, freedom, sex, guilt, social classes and education. He does it with the force of a voice abused and silenced for too long. That voice also connects with the contemporary public through a universal need: “to love each other in freedom.”
