The Uniondale School District’s My Brother’s Keeper program on Long Island recently hosted its fourth annual back-to-school drive at Lawrence Road Middle School and Turtle Hook Middle School to support district students and strengthen the community.
Uniondale “My Brother’s Keeper” members and advisors included New York State Assemblyman Noah Burroughs; Nassau County legislators Olena Nicks and Viviana Russell; collaborating organizations; as well as administrators, teachers and staff of the Uniondale School District, to distribute free backpacks with school supplies to students.
Families also had the opportunity to access community resources, enjoy music performed by Uniondale school band students, and bond as they prepared for the upcoming school year.
Representatives from the Nassau Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the University Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Hofstra University, and FourLeaf Federal Credit Union volunteered for the donation drive.
Additionally, the Uniondale District received a significant donation of backpacks from Fraport and JetBlue, thanks to the efforts of US Congresswoman Laura Gillen.
“The Uniondale School District expresses its sincere gratitude to all the individuals and organizations who volunteered and donated to this high-impact event,” said District Superintendent Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil.
“The extraordinary work of Keith Coles, social worker at Lawrence Road Middle School and lead advisor for the My Brother’s Keeper initiative, was instrumental in organizing and executing this event.”
