About five hundred backpacks were distributed at The Landing School in Glen Cove during the recent annual Back-to-school backpack giveaway organized by Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, the Nassau Police Benevolent Association (PBA), the Glen Cove PBA and the Glen Cove City School District.
The backpacks and school supplies were donated by the Nassau PBA, helping hundreds of families get the 2026-27 school year off to a good start.
Glen Cove PBA members assisted during the August 18 event by controlling traffic as families walked or drove to school.
Additional backpacks were provided to the Glen Cove Youth Bureau and the Crime Victims Center to support their back-to-school community outreach efforts.
“It’s a really nice way to collaborate with community members and ensure students are prepared and ready for school,” said Landing School Principal Rebecca Carfora.
«Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces is something very important and meaningful; “It really reinforces the idea that being ready, prepared and organized is a great way to start the school year.”
For her part, Glen Cove City Schools Superintendent Dr. Alexa Doeschner commented, “This event offers our families the convenience of coming to pick up a backpack in preparation for the new school year, and we thank Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton and the Nassau PBA for choosing our district.”
“It’s great for us to get involved in the community and give back to those who have been so good and supportive of us in the past,” said Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) Corresponding Secretary John Paterson.
“We have been working with Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton for about 7 years, and this is one of the most successful events we have held in the county. “We are glad to be back and I hope the children have an excellent and safe school year,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Minority Leader of the Nassau County Legislature, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton, said, “Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces and watching them interact with the Nassau County and Glen Cove Police Departments is truly heartwarming; “They are very excited.”
