New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang announced the creation of the first Office of Inspector General (OIG) Youth Advisory Council.
This is a statewide virtual program that will bring together eighth grade students from across New York State to explore topics such as government oversight, public service, and civic engagement.
“The future of our country will be shaped by young people willing to ask tough questions and committed to making government work better,” said NYS Inspector General Lucy Lang.
“Our Youth Advisory Council represents an opportunity to start that conversation early, help students better understand the role we all play in government accountability, and incorporate their perspectives into our work to promote public integrity in New York State government.”
The program, which consists of 6 sessions, will take place on select Wednesdays in October and November. Each weekly session will revolve around a central question and combine presentations from OIG staff with group discussions, interactive activities, and final presentations from students on how to improve state government.
The inaugural Inspector General Youth Advisory Council is open to 8th grade students. degree who attend schools in New York State and who have completed, or are currently taking, a course in United States history or government.
Registration will open on Saturday, August 15 – coinciding with National Back-to-School Preparation Day – and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until Friday, September 18, 2026.

The creation of a Youth Advisory Council reinforces Inspector General Lang’s commitment to engaging the public in public integrity by making oversight more accessible, expanding civic education and outreach activities, and creating new opportunities for New Yorkers to participate in the work of the OIG.
