The New York Knicks and the YMCA of Greater New York partnered to host a youth basketball clinic on Saturday, March 21 at the Flushing YMCA, located at 138-46 Northern Blvd., in Flushing, Queens.
Through this clinic—which was part of the “Saturday Night Lights” program—the young participants improved their ball handling and shooting skills.
Knicks legend John Starks was on hand to help lead the clinic and greet participating children and teens.
“Having the opportunity to introduce kids to basketball, to teach them a lot about the game here in Flushing, at the YMCA and through our Saturday night program, is incredible; it allows us to get kids out of the house and into a positive environment,” Starks said.
“We’re excited to be here, and I know the kids are too. It’s very important that we engage them and make them understand that physical exercise is essential. It’s beneficial for your health — including mental health — it keeps you active, allows you to interact with other kids and maybe learn a little about each other. Plus, you make a lot of friends. For us as an organization, these programs mean a lot, keeping our youth involved in our activities and giving us the opportunity to give back to the community.”
Starks, along with the Jr. Knicks coaches present at the clinic, offered valuable insights and advice to attendees.
In addition to helping run the clinic, Starks signed autographs for the children who participated in the event.
Since the Knicks and the YMCA began their collaboration in 2021, more than 1,300 young people have benefited from basketball clinics jointly organized by these institutions.
Beyond fostering the growth of basketball among younger generations, these clinics reflect the Knicks and YMCA’s commitment to offering free, high-quality programs that foster confidence, skill development and social connection, while providing mentoring in a safe and supportive environment.
