The chamber of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico was filled with applause and emotion last Monday, when the iconic singer Olga Tañón, known as the ‘Woman of Fire’, received a well-deserved tribute for her impressive artistic career. The ceremony, led by the president of the Chamber, Carlos ‘Johnny’ Méndez, highlighted how Tañón has marked generations with his voice, his talent and his unmatched passion for Latin music.
With more than 23 albums, a catalog of more than 250 songs, 38 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs and six GRAMMY awards, Tañón is not just an artist, she is an icon of Puerto Rico. During the tribute, Méndez declared:
“Olga Tañon’s voice, talent and dedication have marked generations of Puerto Ricans who see in her a figure who, no matter the challenges that life presents, always seeks to overcome them. For decades, her talent and unique stage presence have been catalytic to raise the name of Puerto Rico high. But Olga is much more than that, she is a selfless mother who always fights for the best for her children and family, that is also to be emulated, that is why, when the spokesperson for the majority, “My friend José ‘Pichy’ Torres Zamora presented me with the idea of this tribute, we immediately accepted it.”
The singer, visibly moved, remembered her roots in Levittown, the neighborhood where she grew up surrounded by family and friends, and where she fell in love with music. “This tribute not only celebrates my career, it represents a message of hope and perseverance for all young people who dream of achieving their goals from our neighborhoods. I will keep this recognition in the depths of my heart,” said Tañón.
The celebration also had its touch of glamor and emotion with the presence of celebrities such as Maripily Rivera, who dedicated words full of admiration: “Today we celebrate your essence, Olga. We celebrate the woman who opened paths, the artist who turned her voice into a flag and the Puerto Rican who carries our island in her heart throughout the world. You not only sing… you empower and heal with each song!”
The tribute included a historic gesture: the signing of House Joint Resolution 277, authored by Representative Pedro Julio ‘Pelle’ Santiago, which designates a section of state highway PR-866 in Toa Baja as ‘Avenida Olga Tañón’, in recognition of her musical legacy and social commitment. From Boulevard Avenue to Aquino Bakery, fans will now be able to walk a path named after their favorite star.
Tañón continues to shine in Latin music and his influence is indisputable. In November 2025 she received the Latin GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, cementing her place among the most powerful voices in the industry. Her electrifying stage presence, unmistakable talent and unique energy continue to inspire millions of fans who admire her inside and outside of Puerto Rico.
The ‘Woman of Fire’ not only sings… she leaves her mark. And now, Levittown has its avenue, and the world a reminder that Olga Tañón is synonymous with passion, talent and Puerto Rican pride.
